Every plate appearance is a one-on-one match between batter and pitcher, scored by the run value of the outcome (the three true outcomes: K, BB/HBP, HR). Win against tougher opponents and your rating climbs more. Ratings update plate-appearance by plate-appearance across 116 seasons.
Batters and pitchers live on separate scales — never compare them directly. 100 Elo ≈ 0.015 runs/PA ≈ ~1 win over a full season. SoS rank: lower = faced tougher opponents. The model sees only K/BB/HR — it is blind to defense, baserunning, and balls in play.
